SilkPeel System Advances Skin Rejuvenation Technology

The SilkPeel Precision Exfoliation and Topical Delivery System manufactured by Emed, Inc. (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) is the first device to perform particle-free abrasion while simultaneously delivering topical formulas that target specific dermatological conditions. This new technology enables the physician to accomplish effective skin rejuvenation by addressing the specific issues and intrinsic physical changes that occur with aging. Over the last decade, lasers, microdermabrasion and chemical peels have emerged as the most sought after treatments for skin resurfacing. However, more and more physicians and their patients are seeking alternatives to these invasive and limited modalities. Typically, deep laser resurfacing is painful and requires excessive downtime. When performing a chemical peel, it is difficult to control the precise depth of exfoliation and the outcomes are unpredictable. Similarly, some concerns have arisen over the use of the free-flowing abrasive particles used in microdermabrasion (aluminum oxide, Al2O3).

The SilkPeel, patented by emed, redefines skin resurfacing with its Enhanced Topical Delivery approach. The distal end of the handpiece consists of a diamond treatment head that is located inside a transparent disposable tip. When the handpiece comes in contact with the skin, the tissue being treated is gently brought into contact with the abrasive surface of the treatment head. Precise exfoliation occurs as the handpiece is drawn over the skin. Concurrently, targeted treatment solution are delivered tot he tr4eated tissue as the stratum corneum is removed. Residual solution and exfoliated tissue are evacuated into a sealed waste container.

Pharmaceutical formulations, created exclusively for the use with the SilkPeel, effectively treat all skin types and address a wide range of dermatological conditions including acne, hyperpigmentation, photodamage, dehydration and fine line wrinkles. The possibility presents itself to adapt other existing topical treatments, for conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and melasmas, for enhanced delivery through the SilkPeel. Gregory Keller, M.D., of Santa Barbara, Calif., director of the Facial Plastic Surgery Fellowship at UCLA, is currently conduction histological evaluations of tissue samples treated with the SilkPeel. "Physicians are ready for the cutting-edge technology the SilkPeel offers. It appears that by delivering these solutions at the precise moment of exfoliation, the topicals are able to absorb deeper into the tissue. The results I've seen using the system with the hyperpigmentation bleaching solution have been impressive and comparable to the resultsfrom more expensive and more invasive therapies such as CO2 lasers."

Gayla Pinkosky, a medical aesthetician working under Dr. Keller, concurs. "Our patients with acne and photodamage are amazed by the dramatic results visible after only two or three sessions," she says. "We have experienced a very high demand for this procedure since we introduced it for evaluation. Our patients have told us that they perefer the SilkPeel to microdermabrasion." SilkPeel is "unlike any other product I've seen." states David Kamin, M.D., Oculoplastic Surgeon and Associate Clinical Professor at UCLA. "Simplifying skin resurfacing while broadening the scope of treatable conditions is highly innovative. The SilkPeel eliminates many of the complications associated with lasers and chemical peels."
